How do our experiences as children shape our health as adults? What does it mean to be trauma-informed, and what does trauma-informed care look like in a health care setting?

In this animated video, meet “Dr. Cruz,” who addresses these questions and shares what she has learned about caring for patients with exposure to trauma, including abuse, neglect, and violence. View the video to learn about the lifelong impact of trauma on health, and how trauma-informed care can create a more welcoming environment for patients, providers, and staff. The video is available in English and English with Spanish subtitles.

How to Use This Video

Use this video to spread the word about the impact of trauma on health and how adopting trauma-informed care can potentially improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, and health outcomes, as well as provider and staff wellness. Use the video in a variety of ways to inform key audiences, for example:

  • Senior Decision-Makers: Demonstrate the value of trauma-informed care and gain buy-in to initiate new programs.
  • Clinical/Non-Clinical Staff: Introduce the concept of trauma-informed care by screening the video at a staff meeting or training, and/or incorporate into new employee onboarding.
  • Health Care Providers: Illustrate how peers are adopting trauma-informed approaches to improve patient outcomes and combat burnout.
